Easter Bunny Project

Heroes4Heroes has partnered with Kids Kicking Cancer in the hope of reminding the children at Baragwanath hospital that are suffering from cancer, that they too can be heroes. This visit, however, was particularly special for me as instead of bringing these children superheroes, we brought them the Easter Bunny. Celebrating Easter is a commonality in most households, a tradition that lacks much thought. However, many of these children are unable to celebrate Easter in the conventional manner, as a result of their cancer. And so, we brought the Easter Bunny to these children, and not just any Easter bunny but an Easter bunny who can do karate. It was truly heart-warming to see the excitement on the children's faces as they bounced up and down with the Easter bunny and played 'Bunny says', our own version of 'Simon says'. Even their mothers landed up joining in. A particularly special moment for me was when the children breathed in the light and breathed out all the darkness. It was both beautiful and sad to watch the children as they closed their eyes and tried to let go of all pain and instead focus on hope. Then, after the session of karate, we handed out Easter eggs to the children and they were able to take photos with the Easter bunny. It was truly heart-warming to see the smiles' the Easter bunny brought to those children's faces and to hear their immense excitement at the prospect of meeting him. I truly cannot wait until our next visit.
